CROSSED LINES

Mike smiled at Liv as he walked past her to his seat the next morning.

She smiled back. “How are you feeling?”

“Much better.” He slid into his chair.

Liv searched his face, then asked, “Up to some study buddy-ing today?”

“Yeah!” Mike wished he didn’t feel so elated, but it felt good to talk to her again even if she’d stood him up the last time and still hadn’t offered an apology or explanation. He felt sure she was under a lot of stress.

“Great! How about the department study space this afternoon for an hour or so?”

“Sounds good!”

Nodding and shooting Mike another smile, she turned back to her phone.

Jonathan walked into class, setting his bag and books down. His gaze went straight to Mike, and he lifted an eyebrow. Mike gave him the thumbs-up sign with a big grin. With a faint smile, Jonathan nodded in acknowledgment. Mike was struck by how subdued his lecturer seemed. His gaze slid back to Liv. She seemed back to her usual self. Hoping nothing would postpone their study date, he turned his attention back to Jonathan.
